These robotic suits, worn by humans and produced by Cyberdyne in Japan, let the paralysed walk and give care-workers extra strength to carry the old and infirm to a wheelchair. Businesses like this need stability to prosper - and the country’s recent parade of interchangeable prime-ministers (five in four years) has hardly helped.

The Economist has failed point out why Dr. Sankai had to meet 4 prime ministers in the first place: He needs protection against foreign companies who wants to buy up his firm to make infantry combat suits using his technology, and he wants to make sure that no one gets to make any weapons out of his technology. In a scene straight out of the Clint Eastwood movie “Firefox”, he once even threatned to destroy his memos and commit suicide rather than cooperate in weapons development. Thank god he is Japanese, as I can’t think of any other country that would pass up on such an opportunity.
